Melicytus dentatus

Common Name: Tree Violet

Family: Violaceae

Grimwade sheet number: 66a

Original identification: Hymenanthera angustifolia

Distribution (from Flora of Victoria):
This was included in Flora of Victoria as Hymenanthera dentata, a species that is widepread in southeast Australia and variable in morphology (and recently transferred to the genus Melicytus). The 7th edition of A Census of the Vascular Plants of Victoria by J. H. Ross and N. G. Walsh, suggests that three new species, as yet undescribed, can be segregated from M. dentatus. The specimen in the Grimwade Plant Collection probably belongs to a segregate species that is restricted to rocky areas in the snowfields of eastern Victoria and Snowy Mountains of New South Wales and in the Australian Capital Territory.
