Stylidium montanum was included in Flora of Victoria as "Stylidium sp. 1" and the species was subsequently named by Raulings & Ladiges (2001; Australian Systematic Botany 14, 901-935). It occurs on water-retentive, peaty soils of subalpine and alpine damp grassland and wet alpine heath communities of the Eastern Highlands and East Gippsland and adjacent areas of the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales, often bordering drainage lines such as the upper reaches of streams. It is known in Victoria from the Bogong High Plains, the Snowy Ranges, Mt Buffalo, Nunniong Plateau, Cobberas area and from Kosciuszko National Park in New South Wales, and also Tasmania.
