Geneticist specialising in the impacts of pesticides, particularly those targeting nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the insect brain, on both pests and beneficial species. Received the Genetics Society of Australasia MJD White Medal for research excellence in Genetics. He was also awarded the National Carrick Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning and is a five-time finalist in the Eureka Prize for Public Communication of Science. Professor Roger Cousens (Emeritus Professor)
Honorary Member of the Weed Science Society of America.
Plant ecologist known for his work on competition between weeds and crops and on invasive plant population dynamics. His recent research has focussed on non-adaptive hybridisation between invading species differing in mating systems. He is the primary author of two books: Dynamics of Weed Populations and Dispersal in Plants: A Population Perspective. He runs the ANdinA international workshops for ecological debate. He was formerly head of the Department of Crop Production, the School of Resource Management and Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning) of the Melbourne School of Land and Environment and moved to the School of BioSciences when it was formed. Cell Biologist whose work provided insights into the biochemistry and genetics of flowering plants, their reproduction and their responses to attack by pests. Professor Barbara Evans (Emeritus Professor)
Zoologist specializing in comparative cardiovascular and respiratory studies and the endocrinology of reptiles and Australian native mammals. These studies included invertebrate physiology (sea squirts, earthworms, octopus and abalone), patterns and control of ventilation in reptiles, diving physiology of the platypus, endocrinology of stress in monotremes and measurement of reproduction hormones in Australian native mammals.
Co-author of the award-winning undergraduate textbook Biology: An Australian Focus (Best Australian Textbook and an Overall Award for Excellence in Australian PublishingBest Australian Textbook; Overall Award for Excellence in Australian Publishing).
Senior administrative positions included Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research Training) and Dean of the School of Graduate Studies at The University of Melbourne, Convener Universitas 21 Deans of Graduate Studies, and Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Professor of Zoology at the University of British Columbia. Professor Michael Hynes (Emeritus Professor)
Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science
Biologist specializing in molecular genetics. He has used recombinant DNA and genomics to study eukaryotic gene regulation in filamentous fungi with particular interests in the control circuits affecting carbon and nitrogen catabolic pathways. He was amongst the first to demonstrate multiple regulatory proteins controlling a single structural gene via a complex promoter and was involved in the analysis of the genome of Aspergillus nidulans. Botanist recognised for advancement of botanical science and pioneering research on the phylogenetic systematics and historical biogeography of Australia plants, especially eucalypts. Co-author of three award-winning Biology textbooks for tertiary and secondary students; past Secretary, Australian Academy of Science, Education and Public Awareness. Head Department of Zoology (University of Melbourne) including a period after sight loss. Leader and coordinator of the University of Melbourne project to establish a marine station on Point Nepean. Professor Jeremy Pickett-Heaps (Emeritus Professor)
Centenary Medal of Australia, Fellow of the Royal Society, Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science
Plant cell biologist specialising in microtubule formation and dynamics; originator of the concept of microtubule organizing centres (MTOCs). Author of the book Green Algae: Structure, Reproduction and Evolution in Selected Genera, which clarified the origin of plants from certain green algae based on cell division style and organisation of flagellar roots.
