Plant Systematic Research Group Seminar - Dr Tom Givnish - Plastid phylogenomics and drivers of megadiversity in monocots

Dr Tom Givnish, Henry Allan Gleason Professor of Botany at the University of Wisconsin-Madison will give a talk entitled “Plastid phylogenomics and drivers of megadiversity in monocots”. Dr Givnish’s research explores adaptive radiations focusing on the historical processes by which plants arise and diverge, with research underway focusing on global monocots, Hawaiian lobeliads, and the physiological determinants of Eucalyptus species distributions. Dr Givnish will discuss results of his recent study (Givnish et al., 2018) that used plastome data to investigate rates of species diversification and outlined a new functional model for the evolution of monocots from submersed aquatic ancestors.
