Research interests

Visual ecology

I am interested in the evolution of animal visual systems, animal colouration and the relationship between the two. I use behavioural, physiological and field based studies to understand the function of different animal colours and how these colours are perceived by other animals.

  • Behavioural ecology
  • Visual physiology
  • Camouflage
  • Visual signals
  • Animal vision
  • Animal colouration

Research projects

  • The role of iridescence and gloss in survival of moving prey
  • Does the mirror-like body of Thwaitesia spiders attract prey?
  • What do jewel beetles see? Behavioural experiments investigating jewel beetle vision
  • Iridescence and visual communication in jewel beetles
