Casual tutoring opportunities
Each year, the School hires casual tutors to deliver tutorials, field trips and workshops, and to undertake assignment marking. We welcome applications from past and prospective tutors – priority will be given to our current postgraduate students and graduate researchers.

Current opportunities for academics
Continuing and Fixed Term roles, including Graduate Researcher Academic Associate roles and Fixed Term and Continuing Teaching focused or Teaching and Research roles, are advertised on the University's Careers website.
Important notes
Outcome timelines
Most applicants will receive an outcome within the advertised timeframe. However, where casual teaching requirements depend on student enrolments, final confirmation may sometimes occur closer to, or by, the start of the teaching period.
Graduate Research students
University of Melbourne PhD or Masters students applying for casual teaching roles must meet the relevant candidature requirements and have the support of their supervisor.
Qualifications
Casual academic staff are generally expected to have at least an Honours degree or equivalent relevant qualification/experience, depending on the teaching role.
Working with Children Check
All employees of the University of Melbourne, including those engaged casually, are required to hold a valid employee Working with Children Check. Further information is available on the Working with Children website or by contacting the University’s HR Assist team.
Formal application
All casual academic staff must submit a formal application through the approved recruitment process before they can be engaged.
Late applications
Late applications may not be accepted unless there are exceptional circumstances and the School has an identified teaching need.
Graduate Researcher Academic Associates
The Graduate Researcher Academic Associate (GRAA) program provides eligible graduate researchers with opportunities to undertake paid academic work alongside their research candidature. Roles may be education- or research-focused and provide valuable experience and professional development as part of an academic career pathway.
Eligibility, role availability and appointment arrangements vary by Faculty and program.
