Our research themes

From sustainable food systems to protecting our precious biodiversity, our researchers use collaborative approaches to explore, investigate and solve global challenges in the following research areas.

  • Biological approaches for conserving biodiversity

    Our expertise combines a foundational understanding of ecology in the lab and in the wild, with world-leading molecular expertise to drive the de-extinction of emblematic species and improve conservation and restoration outcomes.

  • Biological foundations of life

    We generate new insights into the fundamental processes that underpin all aspects and scales of life, from individual cells through to entire ecosystems.

  • Biological solutions for healthy societies

    Our research tackles biomedical challenges, from remedying infectious and non-communicable disease drivers to tackling the drivers of health inequalities, often in partnership with peers in the health and medical fields.

  • Communication of biological concepts

    Our education and communication researchers actively develop novel approaches to communicate biological concepts more effectively to our next generation of biologists as part of and beyond tertiary education.

  • Sustainable food systems

    We develop approaches to fight weeds, mitigate fungal and invertebrate pests in agriculture, control parasites in aquaculture systems, improve nutrient profiles in crops and minimise the environmental impacts of fisheries and agriculture.

  • Biological responses to environmental change

    We seek an understanding of the biological processes of environmental change to make better predictions and management decisions about habitat restoration, pest control, climate change responses and biosecurity.
